Hanover (dpa / lni) - The twelve remaining model municipalities for opening inner cities in the corona pandemic have agreed on an earliest possible start date, according to the Lower Saxony Association of Cities (NST).

"That would be April 15," said NST managing director Jan Arning of the German press agency after a round of talks with the model municipalities on Friday.

Individual model municipalities want to follow suit on April 16 or 17.

Who exactly was initially unclear - but the majority of the model municipalities are aiming for a start on April 15, said Arning.

The managing director emphasized, however, that the start date was subject to further developments at the federal level.

On Friday it became known that the federal and state governments want to sharpen the infection protection law in an urgent procedure.

The aim is to create nationwide uniform regulations for regions with high numbers of infections, said a government spokeswoman in Berlin.

What this means for the model projects in Lower Saxony cannot yet be foreseen, said Arning.

"Nobody can start a model test with this uncertainty."

Whether and which exemptions could possibly apply to the model municipalities will probably not be known until the beginning of next week at the earliest.

In the event that the new law provides for the model projects to be canceled if the incidence of seven days is over 100, this cannot be started in Lower Saxony.

This can neither be expected of the municipalities nor the participating companies and cultural institutions, he said.
