Hanover (dpa / lni) - The number of people who died from or with Corona in Lower Saxony has risen to 5,000.

That comes from the daily status report of the state health office on Friday.

About 87 percent of the fatalities were therefore 70 years or older.

The youngest to die were in the group of 20 to 29 year olds (five cases).

The daily death toll reached its peak in early January and has since declined sharply.

A total of 207 905 corona infections have been detected in Lower Saxony since the outbreak of the pandemic.

According to estimates, almost 90 percent of those affected are now considered recovered.

The national seven-day incidence was given by the health department as 89.5 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

That is significantly less than a week ago (115.1).

However, the number of cases reported on the days after Easter was lower than before the holidays, which the health department had attributed to fewer doctor visits and tests.

The city of Salzgitter (202.3) again recorded the regionally highest corona value, followed by the city of Wolfsburg (188.1) and the district of Cloppenburg (174.0).

A total of 14 regions were above an incidence value of 100. There, stricter corona rules apply than in the rest of Lower Saxony - for example for private contacts.
