This Easter weekend was marked by a spectacular arrest in Italy.

One of the bosses of the Casa Nostra mafia network was arrested when he got off his plane in Palermo, Sicily.

Giuseppe Calvaruso on the run in Brazil had come to spend the Easter holidays with his family, before being imprisoned. 

It was a comeback with great fanfare for this Sicilian mobster.

But it ends up behind bars.

Giuseppe Calvaruso, an important Cosa Nostra boss was arrested on Sunday.

No sooner had he set foot in his country of origin than the Italian police had already handcuffed him.

He came straight from Natal, in northeastern Brazil, to spend the Easter holidays with his family in Palermo.

In order not to arouse suspicion, the chieftain pretended to be a surveyor always between two planes.

But he did not arrive until the paschal meal.

The 46-year-old man was picked up as soon as he got off the plane at Palermo airport after a stopover in Paris.

For months, the district chief of Paglarelli managed his affairs remotely from the American continent where he was hiding.

A "man of honor" in charge of "public order"

According to the local press, on his territory, he had to go through him to be authorized to open a new business or settle a dispute.

Giuseppe Calvaruso, described as a "man of honor" in charge of "public order" in his territory, also maintained contacts with other clans, according to investigators.

He would have invested the capital of his clan in construction and catering.

He had also forged links with a Singaporean businessman eager to invest in Sicily.

With him, four of his right arms were locked up.

They are all accused of "mafia associations, extortion, assault and battery, kidnapping of people and illegal acquisition of property".

This spectacular arrest comes two years after that of the last boss of Casa Nostra, Settimo Mineo.
