Lüneburg (dpa / lno) - The controversial pumping attempt by the Coca-Cola company for a third well for pumping groundwater in the Lüneburg district is due to come to an end next Tuesday (April 13).

“This is followed by a phase of several weeks in which the rebound in the water levels in the measuring points is observed.

The data will then be evaluated by the hydrogeologists and an expert report will be prepared, ”said a company spokeswoman.

Originally, the test drilling, in which the extracted water is directed into a nearby river, should be finished by the end of March.

"The duration of the pumping attempt and the amount of water pumped correspond to the requirements of the permit issued by the competent lower water authority, which includes a pumping of up to 118,000 cubic meters of water over a period of up to 70 days," it said.

With the new well, the group wants to pump up to 350,000 cubic meters of water annually from a depth of around 195 meters.

In view of climate change, critics are against further extraction of groundwater from deep rock strata for commercial purposes.

The results of the pumping test are essential components of the water law application and they are also interpreted in the course of public participation.

Coca-Cola plans to file the application in the third quarter of this year.

With its subsidiary Apollinaris, the beverage company already maintains two wells in the Hanseatic city for bottling mineral water and sells the extracted water under the name “Vio”.
