Cairo (dpa) - Five days after the end of the blockade in the Suez Canal, those responsible there speak of normalization of shipping traffic.

The traffic jam is expected to clear on Saturday, said Usama Rabi, chairman of the canal authority, the TV broadcaster MBC Masr.

By Sunday the traffic will have "completely normalized".

On Saturday, 85 ships should pass through the canal, including 24 new ones that have been arriving since Monday, Rabi said.

According to the canal service provider Leth Agencies, around 150 ships were waiting for passage on Saturday.

The investigations into the question of how the container ship "Ever Given" could run aground in the canal continued.

Only after they have been concluded there will be talks about compensation, said Rabi.

Egypt does not want to allow the 400-meter-long container ship to continue its journey until an agreement has been reached.

The "Ever Given" anchored on the Great Bitter Lake between the northern and southern parts of the canal.

The US aircraft carrier "USS Eisenhower" also crossed the canal in a southerly direction on Friday.

The canal authority released a video of the aircraft carrier slowly passing the canal.
