After his withdrawal from the Bundestag, the CDU politician Mark Hauptmann also resigned from the party in connection with the mask affair.

This will take place with immediate effect, announced the Thuringia regional association on Friday.

This means that Hauptmann is complying with the request of state chairman Christian Hirte and the state executive, it said.

The "Spiegel" had previously reported that Hauptmann had received around one million euros in commission for arranging mask business.

This emerged from a search warrant for Hauptmann's offices and living quarters, the magazine reported on Friday.

Accordingly, a Frankfurt company initially paid the politician 40,000 euros.

Hauptmann's consulting firm later billed the company for 957,000 euros.

The sum is said to have been transferred to Hauptmann's consulting firm in February 2021.

The investigators discovered a written justification for this: It was about a "commission billing for brokerage transactions in 2020, period: August to November, reference turnover: 7,500,000 euros".

According to the magazine, the investigators apparently do not yet know which customers the medical accessories went to.

The Thuringian Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating Hauptmann on suspicion of bribery of mandate holders in connection with mask business.

On Thursday, the accused's living quarters, his Bundestag office and several CDU district offices in southern Thuringia were searched.

According to information from Thursday, the public prosecutor's office sees “tangible factual indications” that Hauptmann has demanded commission payments from a company in connection with the mediation of mask business.

He is said to have invoiced a high six-digit euro amount for his mediation via the consulting company he founded, which is also said to have flowed.

Two weeks ago, Hauptmann resigned from his CDU Bundestag mandate

Hauptmann had resigned his CDU parliamentary mandate around two weeks ago after allegations that he had accepted money from foreign governments, including Azerbaijan.

The politician denies the allegations.

He had also signed a declaration of honor from the Union faction that no financial benefit was drawn from pandemic-related transactions.

Hauptmann's defense lawyer did not want to comment on the new findings in the mask affair.

The Thuringian CDU has now checked all donations from the past two years.

A controversial donation of 7,000 euros, which had gone to the CDU district association in Suhl - the captain was in charge until recently - was transferred to the Bundestag administration.

It came from a domestic company that was mentioned in connection with mask deliveries.

The affair of commission payments in mask business and lobbying had deeply shaken the CDU and CSU.

In addition to Hauptmann, MPs Georg Nüßlein, Nikolas Löbel and Tobias Zech also resigned.
