Berlin (dpa) - If the lockdown in retail continues, according to the German Retail Association (HDE) there is a risk of losing up to 120,000 stores in the Federal Republic.

HDE President Josef Sanktjohanser warned in a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) that the consequences for city centers and social life would be devastating.

In the letter available to the German Press Agency, the HDE President appealed to the Chancellor to "initiate a long overdue change in strategy for combating pandemics" at the federal and state corona summit on Monday.

The development of the incidence value should no longer serve as the benchmark for further action.

Rather, other aspects such as the utilization of intensive care capacities and the proportion of severe disease progression as well as the increased number of tests would have to be taken into account.

The trade is ready to make its contribution to enable a “complete opening of all shops in a timely manner” in compliance with hygiene and distance rules.

Sanktjohanser complained that retailers are currently being asked to make a special sacrifice for the general goal of reducing contact.

“The cities, parks and green spaces are full of people, the streets are full, many companies are working normally, only retail, restaurants and hotels are still closed.

This everyday picture makes the affected dealers angry and desperate, ”wrote the HDE President.

Because the promise made by the government to save healthy companies through state aid is far from being kept.
