Fulda (dpa / lhe) - Heiko Wingenfeld (CDU) has been re-elected as Mayor of Fulda.

In the direct election on Sunday, the 47-year-old prevailed against the SPD challenger Jonathan Wulff with around 64.7 percent of the vote.

Wulff achieved around 35.3 percent.

This means that Wingenfeld can begin his second term as Lord Mayor of the East Hessian city.

Around 50,000 people were eligible to vote, and the turnout was 47.24 percent.

Before he took office in August 2015, Wingenfeld was chosen in March of the same year with 66.6 percent of the votes for the chief post in the Fulda City Palace.

Wingenfeld wants to focus on education, the creation of affordable living space in the city center and the expansion of medical care in Fulda, among other things.

Before his position as Lord Mayor, the doctor of law had worked as a lawyer in Frankfurt for two years and was then the first district member of the Fulda district from 2006 to 2015.

Wingenfeld is married and has three children.
