Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - In the affair of the company car and excessive salaries at the Frankfurt Workers' Welfare Association (Awo), the public prosecutor is now also investigating the Mayor of Frankfurt Peter Feldmann (SPD) and his wife.

After there had already been preliminary investigations, an investigation has been conducted since the end of February because of the initial suspicion of taking advantage, said a spokeswoman.

Hessenschau.de had previously reported on it.

In 2019 reports of an excessive salary for Feldmann's current wife as the head of a German-Turkish daycare center triggered the Awo scandal.

Since then, there have been investigations into further allegations on suspicion of fraud and infidelity against former leaders of the Frankfurt Awo.

For more than a year now, the Awo has been set up with a new board and presidium.

Feldmann Frau has already repaid excessive salaries.

"There is still nothing to do with the suspicion," said Feldmann in a statement on Friday.

"Nevertheless, I have no doubt that the proceedings will finally give me the opportunity to rebut the unfounded suspicions once and for all."

He had no influence on his wife's contract.

The processes at the Awo are not in his sphere of influence and his responsibility as Lord Mayor.

"I also had no influence on Awo's contracts with the city, nor did I deal with them in detail."

The fact that there are now media reports about the investigation two days before the local elections are “campaign skirmishes”, said Feldmann.

The Frankfurt SPD leader Mike Josef also put the reports in connection with the election: "I do not believe in coincidences," he said in view of the investigation into the Awo scandal that has been ongoing for a year.

"The timing shows: Obviously it's not about the truth, but about the choice."

“This affair has been simmering for far too long, it has already damaged the city's reputation immensely.

It is good when it is finally fully cleared up », it said in a statement by Bündnis90 / Die Grünen.

The previous statements by Feldmann were not credible.

"He should now clear the table and present his personal links with the Awo scandal transparently and openly," demanded the Greens.

Feldmann should "refrain from public appearances on behalf of the city of Frankfurt until the allegations have been clarified".

Feldmann had emphasized in the Frankfurt city council last year that he was not responsible for the inconsistencies at the Awo.

He had no influence on the city's contracts with the Awo or on the employment contract of his future wife, he said in a question time.

"I have nothing to hide.

I am convinced that I have behaved correctly - and that is why I consciously face the comprehensive examination by my employer », he justified his application for disciplinary proceedings by the Ministry of the Interior in March of last year.
