Berlin / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The state-owned foundation "Climate and environmental protection MV", established in connection with the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, remains under criticism.

Transparency Germany and the Maecenata Foundation see the establishment as a “political abuse of the good reputation of foundations”.

This construction is playing with the credibility of many charitable foundations and civil society organizations, said Transparency board member Sonja Grolig on Wednesday.

In a democracy, citizens should be able to rely on the fact that institutions - whether private or public - also contain what is outside.

The Schwerin state parliament cleared the way for the foundation at the beginning of January.

The foundation, which is oriented towards the common good, aims to promote projects in the field of environmental, nature and climate protection, but also to be able to be commercially active.

The foundation plans to buy components and machines that are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline.

This was intended to circumvent threatened US sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the line.

The foundation is heavily criticized by climate activists and the Greens, among others.

Transparency has serious doubts that the foundation serves the specified goals of environmental and climate protection.

The Russian state-owned company Gazprom is participating in the foundation through its subsidiary Nord Stream 2 AG with an amount of 20 million euros - one hundred times the foundation capital provided by the state government.

In return, the group receives far-reaching decision-making powers such as naming the management.
