Hanover (dpa / lni) - The Lower Saxony state parliament deliberates on the second day of its plenary week on Thursday (10 a.m.) on the future of agriculture.

The government factions of the SPD and CDU have submitted an application to regionalize meat marketing and slaughter.

In view of regular scandals in meat processing, the social acceptance of the central slaughterhouse system is falling, and consumers are showing ever greater interest in the methods of keeping and slaughtering livestock, according to the reason.

The request to the government is to give financial support to decentralized and mobile slaughterhouses and to support the reactivation of artisanal slaughterhouses.

Appropriate framework conditions would have to be created to offset the competitive disadvantage of small, artisanal slaughterhouses compared to industrial slaughterhouses.

A decentralized slaughter of animals is characterized by a high ethical standard and respect for the animal and could contribute to reactivating butcher shops in rural areas, it said in the application.

The FDP takes up two problem areas that have repeatedly driven farmers to protests on the streets and in front of the food retailer's warehouses in recent months.

The liberals are calling for the government to intervene against the dying of farms, because stricter requirements, for example on groundwater protection and low prices in trade, threaten livelihoods in agriculture.

Balanced conditions of competition are necessary for a functioning market, the dominant position of individual retail groups must be ended, according to the application.

In addition, the country's new fertilizer restrictions would have to be reviewed.

At the request of the Greens, the state parliament is reviewing the government's planned relocation of the control of the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry from the state to the municipal level.

This would destroy the expertise pooled at the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (Laves) without guaranteeing a consistently high professional standard in the municipalities, the Greens fear.
