Hanover (dpa / lni) - In Lower Saxony, almost half a million people were in need of care at the end of 2019 - the number of those affected has increased noticeably since 2017.

A total of 456 255 people were in need of care at the end of 2019, as the State Office for Statistics announced on Wednesday.

In the period since 2017, the number of care allowance recipients who were cared for by relatives at home rose by 20.3 percent to 234 070. Almost a quarter (104 279; plus eight percent) lived in their own thanks to an outpatient care service four walls.

In nursing homes, the number of people looked after remained roughly the same.

A total of 96 741 people were housed in care facilities, as the State Office for Statistics announced.

Most of them, namely 93,364 women and men, were in permanent care, a further 3,377 in short-term care.

19,968 people were cared for in so-called semi-stationary care.

According to the statistics office, the data come from the nursing statistics, which are compiled every two years on December 15th.

The proportion of women among those in need of care was 62.4 percent - age played an important role.

Among those under 65 years of age, men received the corresponding benefits somewhat more often, with a share of 53 percent.

Among the very old aged 95 and over, the proportion of men was only 17.3 percent.

Almost half (45.5 percent) of those in need of care had minor impairments in their independence or in their skills.

According to data from the Association of Substitute Funds (vdek) as of January 1, 2021, people in need of care in Lower Saxony and Bremen have to pay more and more out of their own pocket for care in the home.

In Lower Saxony, the co-payments increased by 63 euros per month compared to July 2020 to 1767 euros.

In the state of Bremen it was 2026 euros (plus 67 euros).

Both countries are still below the national average of 2068 euros per month.

In a comparison of the federal states, the most expensive home places remain in North Rhine-Westphalia with an average of 2460 euros.
