Dutch police have arrested at least 70 people after riots broke out for the third night in a row in several cities in the Netherlands, after a weekend of protests initially linked to anger over the government's decision to impose a curfew.
However, the motivations behind the acts of vandalism and other incidents in various cities across the country on Monday, including Rotterdam and Amsterdam, were unclear, as most of the rioters were teenagers.
Police chief Willem Woelders said on TV the 70 arrests took place around 10 p.m.
The police used water cannons in Rotterdam and tear gas in Haarlem to disperse the crowd.
"Criminal violence"
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte condemned the riots that occurred over the weekend in which anti-containment protesters attacked police and started fires.
"It has nothing to do with protests, it is criminal violence that must be treated as such," said the head of government.
Police said they arrested hundreds of people over the weekend, and imposed more than 5,700 fines for violating the curfew.
