In the global market which fell by 14.2%, Renault saw its sales fall by 21.3% worldwide in 2020. The automaker only sold 2.9 million vehicles against 3.8 million in 2019.

The decline is even stronger in Europe where its sales are down 25.8%.

As for the French market, sales of passenger cars fell by 24.9%, causing it to lose 25% of the market share.

Like the entire automotive sector, Renault has suffered from restrictions linked to the global health crisis.

This is all the more striking for the diamond firm which operates mainly in countries heavily affected by Covid-19.

The health crisis worsens the difficulties that Renault has been going through for several months.

Last spring, the automaker announced a plan of 2 billion euros in savings with 15,000 job cuts including 4,600 in France.

In two days, the new general manager

Luca De Meo

will present his strategic plan.

Called “Renaulution”, resolutely turned towards the future, it should favor “profitability over volumes”, in other words selling fewer cars but selling them at a higher price.

A strategic about-face for the company.
