Officially, the head of US diplomacy, one of the outgoing Republican president's most loyal ministers, has decided to stay in Washington to facilitate a “smooth and orderly transition” with President-elect Joe Biden's team.

This is why Mike Pompeo would have canceled this Tuesday his last trip abroad as US Secretary of State, scheduled for this week in Belgium.

But, according to Reuters, the reason for this cancellation would rather be sought from the representatives of the European Union, who following those of Luxembourg would not have wanted to meet this representative of Donald Trump, and have publicly disavowed the latter. , while he is threatened with dismissal eight days before the end of his mandate.

Stage in Luxembourg already canceled

Mike Pompeo was to travel to Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday to meet his Belgian counterpart Sophie Wilmès and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in order, in particular, to "underline the lasting importance of the transatlantic partnership", often shaken up by President Trump in the over the past four years.

A stage in Luxembourg, initially planned but never publicly announced, had indeed already been canceled to protest against the remarks of the head of the Luxembourg diplomacy Jean Asselborn on Donald Trump, explained to AFP an official of the Grand Duchy.

President Trump is "a political arsonist who must be brought before a criminal court," Jean Asselborn argued last week in the aftermath of the assault on Capitol Hill by supporters of the Republican billionaire.

He also considered that the outgoing president had "absolutely nothing to do with democracy" because "he ignored his own Constitution, court decisions and obviously the election results".

One of Trump's last followers

The trip to Europe, presented as the last abroad of the US Secretary of State, was announced Monday.

But it would coincide with the probable vote Wednesday, in the House of Representatives of the United States, of a second indictment of Donald Trump for having "incited to violence" which struck the Capitol.

Mike Pompeo, while condemning the assault on Capitol Hill, has never clearly distinguished himself from Donald Trump, unlike a growing number of Republicans.
