Recently, large numbers of moose have gathered on a headland just south of Sorsele.

On their annual hike, they do not move on as the ice is unusually weak.

Trampled up moose road

Magnus Bidner and members of the Sorsele Hunters' Association have been by the river during the weekend.

On Saturday, they trampled on tracks that, together with the cold of Sunday night, made the ice stronger in their places.

- The day has been spent trying to save moose from the wake and tread roads across the river with scooters.

The work in recent days together with the cold has meant that several moose have now taken over, he tells SVT.

Big commitment

Private individuals from all over Sweden have become financially involved in the effort on the Vindelälven river.

- This means that we can offer compensation for this risky work.

The ice broke during the rescue this morning, where we were three who were going through, says Magnus Bidner.

The hunters will continue to patrol the bad areas during the day, so that the moose do not go through the ice in the worst places.

On Sunday, the hunters managed to get a cow out of an ice floe on the river, but despite the rescue, she was too weak and did not recover.
