Early on Saturday morning Swedish time, the statement was published in which Donald Trump calls the approval of the vaccine "the greatest scientific achievement in history":
- I have fantastic news.
Today, our country has accomplished a medical miracle.
We have delivered a safe vaccine in just nine months, this is one of the largest scientific achievements in history.
It will save millions of lives and end the pandemic once and for all.
The president also said in the statement that the vaccine will be free for all Americans.
"Free for all Americans"
- I can proudly say that this vaccine will be free for all Americans.
We have already started distributing the vaccine to all states in the country.
The first vaccine will be in place within 24 hours.
The governors ask how the vaccine will be distributed and who will get it first, Trump says and continues:
- We want our senior citizens, healthcare employees and blue light staff to be first in line.
This will quickly reduce deaths and hospitalizations.
Aimed boots at China
During the speech, the President also made a number of glares at China:
- When the Chinese virus invaded our borders, I promised that we would produce a vaccine in record time.
They said it would not work, but today we have reached that goal.
We are the first in the world to produce a verified safe and effective vaccine.
The pandemic may have started in China, but we'm ending it here, in the United States.
Furthermore, Trump also emphasized how safe the vaccine is:
- Pfizer and Moderna have said that the vaccine is 95 percent effective - far above expectations.
It's very safe.
U.S. citizens have participated in studies that are much larger than usual and had no serious side effects.
