The US Supreme Court dismissed the claim of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to review the results of the presidential elections in "key" states - Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - won by Joe Biden.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court indicated that Texas had failed to conclusively prove that the state had the right to make such a claim.

“The state of Texas has not shown a legally justified interest in how elections are held in other states.

All other pending applications are rejected as unfounded, ”the court's decision says.

In his lawsuit, the Texas Attorney General argued that the aforementioned states changed the voting rules, which violated the US Constitution and created the preconditions for large-scale violations and fraud in the elections.

One of the purposes of the lawsuit was to defer the approval of the Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin Electoral College members.

The suit of the Attorney General of Texas was supported by another 17 states, where local authorities are controlled to one degree or another by Republicans.

They filed a petition with the US Supreme Court on behalf of the Amicus curiae ("friends of the court") - interested persons who are not a party to the case and voluntarily represent the court with a competent opinion on the issues under consideration.

Donald Trump himself supported the lawsuit, who demanded to include him in the process as an interested party.

After the Supreme Court dismissed the Texas suit, the US president said the court showed "neither wisdom nor courage."

Recall that Joe Biden won the elections on November 3 in several key states at once in a popular vote, which brought him the necessary 270 votes of the electoral college.

Two days later, on December 14, the electors are to meet and after voting to approve the candidacy of the new US president.

After the electoral college vote, Donald Trump and the Republican Party will no longer have the opportunity to influence the outcome of the presidential election.

Democratic reaction

Joe Biden’s campaign spokesman Mike Guin called the Supreme Court’s ruling expected, adding that Trump’s attempts to challenge the presidential election were unfounded.

“This decision is not surprising.

Dozens of judges, bipartisan election organizers, and even Attorney General Donald Trump have rejected his unfounded attempts to challenge his election defeat.

On Monday, President-elect Biden's clear and convincing victory will be ratified by the electoral college, and on January 20 he will take the oath, ”CNN quoted him as saying.

In turn, New Jersey Democratic Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to take action against 106 Republicans in Congress who supported the lawsuit.

“Simply put, people who want to tear the United States government apart cannot be members of Congress.

The lawsuits filed to destroy public confidence in our democratic system by annulling the clear results of the 2020 presidential elections constitute a violation of the spirit and letter of the Constitution, which every member of Congress, in accordance with the oath, must uphold and defend, ”wrote in his letter Pascrell Jr.

The democrat stressed that the lawsuits were filed "in violation of House rules, which directly prohibit Congressmen from committing inappropriate acts that could negatively affect the reputation of the House."

However, USA Today, which reported on Pascrell Jr.'s letter, notes that Pelosi is unlikely to take any action against the Republican parliamentarians.

Home stretch

Despite numerous attempts and lawsuits filed in courts of various instances, Donald Trump and his supporters have not been able to influence the outcome of the presidential election.

At the same time, the American media note that many of the lawsuits filed by the Republicans were poorly prepared and did not have any evidence to support them.

It is worth noting that Trump and his lawyers were criticized by his own supporters.

So, at the end of November, the well-known Republican radio host Rush Limbaugh said that the president's team had promised to publish loud evidence of electoral violations, but nothing of the kind happened.

Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson also criticized him, saying that he had asked lawyer Sydney Powell to share evidence of fraud on the air of his broadcast.

However, she did not provide any evidence of violations and demanded that all attempts to contact her be stopped.

But not all Republicans have come to terms with a Supreme Court ruling that rejected a Texas suit to review election results in key states.

Thus, the chairman of the Texas Republican Party, Allen West, issued a statement in which he proposed the creation of a Union of states adhering to the Constitution.

“In rejecting Texas’s lawsuit, which was backed by 17 states and 106 congressmen, the Supreme Court ruled that any state could take unconstitutional actions and violate its own electoral laws, and this would be detrimental to law-abiding states, while the guilty state would not be held liable.

This decision sets a precedent that states can violate the US Constitution with impunity.

It will have far-reaching consequences for the future of our constitutional republic.

Perhaps law-abiding states should unite and form a Union of States that will abide by the Constitution, ”West said in a statement.

However, according to the director of the Franklin Roosevelt Foundation for the Study of the United States at Moscow State University, Yuri Rogulev, this is a purely political statement that will not have any consequences.

"The Supreme Court is a US government body that is not elected and is not responsible to the voters, and therefore rejected this claim," the expert explained.

In turn, political analyst Alexander Asafov noted in an interview with RT that Donald Trump may continue to insist that the elections were held with violations.

“In fact, this is an obvious defeat, but Trump will try to further challenge the election results, he will say that the Supreme Court justices dismissed the suit under pressure.

Such attempts will be made after Biden's inauguration.

It can be expected that Trump's legal staff will come up with new ways and lawsuits to prove that Biden lost in the presidential election, ”the expert said.

As for the statement by the chairman of the Texas Republicans, it is unlikely that it will turn into an attempt by a number of states to secede from the central government in Washington, Asafov added.

“It can be expected that there will be attempts by the states, which are headed by Republicans who sympathize with Trump, to create a pro-Trump coalition.

But this will not have any internal political consequences - Trump will not be able to become the president of a part of the United States, since it contradicts the country's Constitution, ”the political scientist emphasized.

In general, the decision of the Supreme Court is unlikely to bring even greater discord into the political life of America, which is already enough in it, the expert added.

“The domestic political situation in the United States is not easy, tense, but such alarmist statements will not aggravate the situation.

Of course, efforts have already been made on the part of Biden and his entourage to explain to the voter that the election results are legitimate, but this is unlikely to change the general mood and state of society, ”concluded Alexander Asafov.
