  • In five years of establishment in Lille, Deliveroo has grown from 20 to 500 partner restaurants.

  • The number of establishments using this delivery service has jumped by nearly 30% since the first containment.

  • In addition to the regulars of the sale of take-out meals, many more traditional restaurants have started to deliver.

Lazy gastronomy.

Since the time they have been established in Lille, we are no longer surprised to see food delivery men by bike roam the streets and squat in front of restaurants while waiting for their orders.

Here as elsewhere, having lunch or dinner delivered has become commonplace if we are to believe the figures published on Wednesday by Deliveroo, one of the major players in the sector.

If the activity of these companies has experienced strong growth in recent years, it is even more obvious since the first confinement linked to the coronavirus epidemic.

What we also know is what the champions of the order are addicted to.

It's been five years since Deliveroo entered the meal delivery market in Lille.

At the time, it was not that widespread and the British company only had about twenty restaurants in its catalog.

Today, Deliveroo is proud to list “more than 500 restaurateurs”, 80% of whom are independent.

Local specialties out of the top 5

Since time, therefore, the company has been able to study the eating habits of its customers.

In the best-of dishes delivered, no local specialty, even if many partner restaurants offer them.

No, Lille flock to the burgers first.

Just behind, there are pizzas, sandwiches, vegetarian food and then sushi.

For the latter category, the figures from Deliveroo do not reflect reality, as many sushi shops have their own team of delivery people.

The people of Lille also have their favorite dishes in certain restaurants.

The number 1 of the moment are the “original fries” from Raptor Shack.

So we went to test it, Wednesday noon, and it's not bad.

The biggest advantage was nevertheless the absence of a queue in front of the restaurant which is, it must be admitted, rudely well hidden in the rue d'Amiens.

The people of Lille are also crazy about the “cheeseburger bacon” from Five Guys or the “curry and cheese naan” from Jaldi Jaldi.

In addition, containments are also the business of meal delivery companies.

Before the coronavirus epidemic, more traditional restaurants were far from systematically offering take-out.

But many of them have adapted in an attempt to survive the crisis.

Thus, in Lille alone, Deliveroo has added 144 restaurants to its catalog since last April, or nearly 29% of the total number of partner establishments.
