Patients visit psychiatric clinics to search for an explanation and treatment for symptoms and disorders that suddenly occurred to them, without a known reason, to be surprised by the doctor’s diagnosis: "You suffer from a lack of vitamins."

After that, psychotherapy turns into a prescription to replace the lack of vitamins that cause symptoms, and a diet that achieves nutritional balance.

Psychiatrists confirmed to "Emirates Today" that they received patients suffering from mental illnesses, which proved to be caused by a shortage of minerals and vitamins that the body needs.

The most prominent of these diseases are depression, forgetfulness, poor attention, and cognitive impairment.

They said physical health is primarily linked to mental health.

In detail, the consultant psychiatrist and the medical director of Al-Amal Hospital for Mental Health, Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Maqsoud, confirmed that depression, pathological forgetfulness and lack of attention are among the most prominent mental illnesses that affect humans as a result of a lack of minerals and vitamins, specifically vitamin B12 and folic acid.

He pointed out that some studies indicate a relationship between vitamin D deficiency and depression.

A consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Muhammad Hassan Farajallah, said that memory and cognitive impairment in the brain is one of the most prominent symptoms that are referred to patients with deficiency of vitamins B1 and B12, especially those who drink alcohol for long periods.

He mentioned that when the doctor meets with this category of patients, he searches her medical history to assess the condition, find out the real causes of the symptoms that she suffers, and then find out whether the cause is satisfactory or due to a lack of vitamins.

He emphasized that following a wrong dietary pattern and neglecting to supply the body with nutrients in complete balance play a major role in the occurrence of some mental disorders, as physical health is reflected negatively and positively on mental health.

The consultant psychotherapist, Dr. Jassem Al-Marzouki, said that the most prominent symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, in particular, are laziness and depression.

He emphasized that controlling the levels of hormones and minerals in the body is indirectly related to the psychological state.

As for the public health specialist and community medicine, Dr. Saif Darwish, he believed that mental health is part of public health, and is mainly affected by a deficiency of minerals and vitamins. Folic acid deficiency leads to depression, and magnesium deficiency causes anxiety and sleep disturbances, and vitamin D deficiency negatively affects Building nerves and mental health.

And he stressed the need to follow a balanced diet to maintain mental health, to take it from its natural sources, and not to take it as a medicinal product except under medical supervision, because it does not contradict each other.

He added that people who undergo gastric bypass operations may face psychological problems, due to the possibility that they will be exposed to a deficiency of some minerals and vitamins after the operation.
