  The Japan Coast Guard said that the cargo ship sent a distress signal at about 1:45 am local time on the 2nd.

The location of the signal was in the sea about 185 kilometers west of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that the waters near Amami Oshima were in the area affected by Typhoon Mesak.

The Ministry of Defense of Japan said that on the night of the 3rd local time, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force found a Filipino crew member wearing a life jacket floating in the sea.
