21 August 2020 The Prosecutor's Office of Cosenza has opened an investigation into the death of MC, a 34-year-old woman in the sixth month of pregnancy who died yesterday in the Annunziata hospital together with the baby she was carrying.

The investigation started with the complaint presented to the police by the woman's husband, who hypothesizes gaps in the assistance to the wife by the health personnel who
managed the hospital path. The magistrates, at this point, are firmly determined to verify that there was no superficiality, or even worse negligence, in the care that was given to the woman and that all the protocols were respected.

The Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, arranged for an inspection to be sent to the hospital of the Annunziata in Cosenza. This is what is stated in a note from the ministry.

MC, resident in Longobardi, a center in Cosentino, died while she was hospitalized in the gynecology department. According to an initial reconstruction of the facts, the woman presented herself
last Monday at the Annunziata emergency room accusing severe abdominal pain. The doctors, after having examined her, had ordered her resignation, evidently considering that the woman did not need special care.

However, the situation became complicated the following Wednesday when the thirty-four-year-old returned to the hospital accusing more and more acute abdominal pain. She
then proceeded to give her further care and carry out new diagnostic investigations which, however, did not help as the woman died on Thursday evening. The attempt to save the life of the child that the woman had in her womb was also useless.

The family members at that point requested the intervention of the judiciary, which, in the face of the evidence of the facts, immediately opened the investigation and ordered the seizure of the medical records of the woman and of the two bodies, on which Monday will be carried out the ' autopsy to ascertain the cause of the death of the 34-year-old and of the child and ascertain any responsibility on the part of the health personnel. The story of the death of MC and his son aroused dismay in Longobardi, a small community of just over two thousand inhabitants where MC's family was well known.
