The famous Brazilian cacique Raoni Metuktire obtained permission from his doctors this Saturday to leave the hospital where he was admitted for a state of great weakness a week ago and to return to his village.
Raoni was supposed to take an official Mato Grosso government plane around 1 p.m. local time (6 p.m. in Paris) to his community of Metuktire, Dois Pinheiros hospital in Sinop, Mato Grosso state, announced. 90-year-old Chief Kayapo was treated there for gastric and intestinal ulcers.
"Now I am healed"
"He still feels a little weak as he is finishing his recovery, but he is strong enough to continue leading his people," said doctor Douglas Yanai, one of the eight specialists who treated Raoni. “I would like to thank all those who supported me (..), who took care of my health during all these days. Now I am healed, ”Raoni said during a brief press conference at the hospital where he appeared in a wheelchair and was thin.
On Thursday, his medical report mentioned a colonoscopy that revealed the presence of new ulcers and inflammation of the colon. The hospital discharge was initially postponed indefinitely. Raoni had been very weakened since the death on June 23 of his wife Bekwyjka, his companion and counselor for over 60 years, following a stroke. He was admitted eight days ago to Colider hospital, also located in the state of Mato Grosso, before being transferred on July 18 to a better equipped establishment in Sinop.
With his labial plateau and traditional feather headdresses, Raoni Metuktire has made some twenty hypermedia tours around the world, meeting two popes, the Emperor of Japan, Prince Charles and the last four French presidents.
