"This is the day when New York starts to reopen and I am so happy to see this day finally come." One hundred days exactly after the confirmation of the first case in the American economic capital, epicenter of the epidemic, the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, was delighted that it officially began its deconfinement, Monday June 8. All New York indicators point to a now controlled epidemic.

The reopening of this metropolis, sluggish since March 22, promises to be very gradual, limited in a first phase to construction and the manufacturing sector.

Within 15 days, the authorities hope to take a second step which will allow you to eat on the terrace or return to the hairdresser. But not yet in theaters and restaurants, for which no recovery date has been set.

Limited reopening due to looting

Provided that the infection rate does not start going up again. Many wonder if the protests against racial inequality that have been stirring the city - and the whole of the United States - for two weeks will revive the epidemic.

"The city has come back to life with the protests (...), this coincides with the first phase and it's good," Brandy Bligen, 70, retired, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). He demonstrated on Saturday, and planned to follow Governor Cuomo's advice, calling for protesters to be tested quickly. But that did not prevent him from being in the metro Monday morning, a simple mask on the face, mandatory.

The reopening of this capital of consumerism seems all the more limited for now that the windows of many stores are protected from plywood since the looting that rocked Manhattan last Monday. The city's curfew has only been lifted since Sunday.
