The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 114,539 people worldwide since its onset in December in China, according to a report by AFP from official sources Monday at 11:00 GMT.

More than 1,853,300 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 193 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic. This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries only testing cases requiring hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 395,000 are today considered cured.

The United States, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus at the end of February, is the most affected country in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 22,109 deaths for 557,590 cases. At least 41,831 people have been declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Italy with 19,899 deaths for 156,363 cases, Spain with 17,489 deaths (169,496 cases), France with 14,393 deaths (132,591 cases), and the United Kingdom with 10,612 dead (84,270 cases).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic began at the end of December, officially counted a total of 82,160 cases (108 new between Sunday and Monday), including 3,341 deaths (2 new), and 77,663 cures.

Europe totaled Monday at 11:00 GMT 78,152 deaths for 942,340 cases, the United States and Canada 22,857 deaths (581,883 cases), Asia 4,989 deaths (140,154 cases), the Middle East 4,901 deaths (101,742 cases), l 'Latin America and the Caribbean 2,778 deaths (64,924 cases), Africa 791 deaths (14,440 cases), and Oceania 71 deaths (7,825 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
