The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has lined up behind the IOC, saying on Friday that more time was needed to decide whether to continue the Tokyo Games this summer, despite more and more calls to postpone, due of the coronavirus pandemic.

"I think we agree with the IOC that we need more expert advice and information than we have today to make a decision," said Susanne Lyons, President from the USOPC during a conference call with journalists.

"We don't have to make a decision. Our tests will not take place next week or in two weeks. They are scheduled in four months. However, I think a lot can change between now and then. to the IOC the opportunity to collect this information and advice, "she added.

And to conclude: "At this stage, we do not think that it is necessary for us to urge them to make a decision".

IOC President Thomas Bach told the New York Times on Thursday that "different scenarios" were under consideration, stressing that any decision to postpone the Games would be premature.

"The IOC has not defined specific emergency plans and it has been clear that they are continuing on the way to Tokyo," said Ms. Lyons.

The context, however, shows a growing unease among certain athletes, whose preparation for the Games is made very difficult by the pandemic. To the point that several of them, as well as former athletes, called on the IOC to postpone the Games, scheduled from July 24 to August 9.

Former American middle distance runner Kara Goucher notably accused the body of placing financial considerations above the health of athletes.

"Athletes are humans, they get sick!" she tweeted. "Postpone, so they can stay confined without worrying about losing their fitness! You lose all credibility! Athletes rather than money, please!"

While acknowledging the challenges facing the athletes, USOPC Executive Director Sarah Hirshland said that they "do not have a unanimous view" on the issue of postponing the Games.

"The outlook is not the same for everyone and that adds to the complexity of the situation. There are some for whom (these Games) look like their only or last chance," she said.
