Expected, the green push has taken place. First in Lyon, Besançon, Strasbourg and Grenoble, with good scores in Toulouse and Bordeaux: EELV environmentalists carried out a significant boost on Sunday in the municipal elections, entering the second round - if it is maintained - with the possibility of winning important town halls.

It was their mantra: to unleash a "green wave" in order to win several big cities and to accentuate their position as the third political force in the country after successful Europeans in May 2019.

On the set this evening the #coronavirus # Covid_19 epidemic overwrites the comments of #municipales.
Despite the serious and anxiety-provoking context, environmentalists are progressing compared to 2014 and compared to European ones. ⬇️

"Ecology is no longer an auxiliary force, it is a central force"

Halfway through, the bet seems to be on the way, but several politicians asked for its postponement on Sunday due to the coronavirus epidemic. Yannick Jadot is one of them. The strong man of EELV however welcomed the good results of the party: "Ecology is no longer a back-up force, it is a central force because ecology is at the heart of everything", a- he declared.

In Grenoble, outgoing mayor Eric Piolle, who had shown the way in 2014, garnered a large lead with around 46% of the vote, according to estimates. In Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian accentuated the dynamic that carried her in the polls by placing herself in the lead (almost 28% of the votes). The probable rallying of Catherine Trautmann and the PS (about 20%) makes the ecologist the favorite to take the town hall.

In Bordeaux, Pierre Hurmic, at the head of a union of the left, is neck and neck around 35% with the outgoing Juppeist mayor Nicolas Florian, an unthinkable result several months ago when the first was credited less than 20%. The Walker Thomas Cazenave, outdistanced with 12.5%, will be the king maker, while the scheduled maintenance of Philippe Poutou (from 10 to 11%) is a thorn in the side of Pierre Hurmic.

In Lyon, Grégory Doucet crushes the competition by approaching 30%, relegating his opponents to 10 points. But the result still unknown in the metropolis, which will have the greatest powers, will in turn have considerable importance on the final result.

A failure in Paris with only 11%

Real surprise, in Toulouse Antoine Maurice, at the head of an alliance with La France insoumise, remains with 28% within reasonable distance of the outgoing LR supported by LREM Jean-Luc Moudenc at 36%. With the possible support of the PS-PCF (18%) and Generations (6%), environmentalists are on the threshold of a bastion deemed difficult to take.

As for Besançon, Anne Vignot, who leads a union of the left largely in the lead (above 30%), could take advantage of the competition between the candidates LR and LREM, both around 20%, to win comfortably.

Even where victory seems complicated, environmentalists score above 20% in metropolitan areas, such as Lille, Rouen and Mulhouse. "Their hopes are confirmed: it seems that they succeeded as in the Europeans to attract the electorate of the first round in 2017 of Emmanuel Macron", analyzed with AFP Emeric Bréhier, director of the Observatoire de la vie Jean-Jaurès Foundation policy.

Big flat in this green wave: David Belliard did not make the weight in Paris with about 11%. If Anne Hidalgo has undoubtedly captured a significant part of the environmental vote by reaching almost 30%, the very low score of the candidate of EELV does not promise her to be able to weigh more in the majority, if she is renewed.
