A large percentage of voters on Sunday reluctant to participate in the first round of municipal elections in France, which are suffering under the repercussions of the spread of the new Corona virus, and are subject to strict measures in order to combat it

The polling center estimated the rate of abstention from 54 to 56%, a significant increase from the percentage recorded in the previous poll in 2014.

"We are on our way to post a 20% drop in relation to the 2014 poll," Openingon Way director Bruno Jan Barr said, adding that "the participation rate should be concluded at 45 or 46%."

The first round of this electoral entitlement took place the day after the government announced the closure of bars, cinemas and shops not devoted to selling food due to the spread of the global epidemic that resulted in the death of 91 people out of about 4,500 injured in France.

It seemed unrealistic to keep the elections that were called upon by about 47.7 million voters to choose their mayors and municipal councils, in the wake of the authorities' decision to stop the movement in the country on a large scale, while the health crisis completely covered the news of the poll.

With the spread of the epidemic increasing, many experts doubt that the second session will be held as scheduled on March 22nd.
