March 14, 2020 France has decided to close all "non-essential" public places, including restaurants, bars, places of worship. The Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe, announced it on live TV. The decision comes after a substantial increase in coronavirus-related infections and deaths.

The closure of "non-essential" places was announced "from midnight". Edouard Philippe stressed that the "serious" decision was made in agreement with the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron and the committee of scientists as the invitations to limit travel "have not been adequately observed" by the French. Philippe spoke of a "sharp increase in contagions and resuscitation hospitalizations".

4,500 infections, 91 deaths: 839 more cases in 24 hours
In the last 24 hours, infections in France have reached 4,500, with an increase of 839 cases in 24 hours. Health Director General Jerome Salomon announced this. Deaths increased by 12, and reached 91. Salomon spoke of an "epidemic now widespread throughout the territory".
