The UAE has announced that all nations will cease issuing new visas in principle on May 17 to halt the spread of the new coronavirus infection. UAE is home to the largest number of Japanese companies in the Middle East, especially in Dubai, and there is concern over the impact on corporate activities.

In the UAE, the United Arab Emirates has been confirmed to have infected 85 people so far, and measures have been taken to contain the country, including closing schools.

Under these circumstances, the UAE government announced on April 14 that the government will cease issuing new visas to all countries, including Japan, on April 17 in order to stop the spread of infection through state-run communications.

For visas that have already been issued, it is valid.

UAE has functioned as the economic hub of the region, with over 340 Japanese companies, the largest in the Middle East, having entered the UAE.

An executive of a Japanese company entering the market said, “Since neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia have already begun restricting immigration, they have stopped urgent business trips. Concerns are widespread among Japanese companies, including the suspension of new issuance.

In the capital city of Abu Dhabi, one of the pillars of the economy, such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum, will be closed by the end of this month. Some observers say that it cannot be done.
