Cargo bikes are particularly successful in Bordeaux. - E.Provenzano / 20 Minutes

  • In Bordeaux, the scooter is particularly successful and often replaces the second car for young couples of parents.
  • Another particularity of Bordeaux, women are overrepresented among Bordeaux cyclists, compared to other cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants.

In Bordeaux, chronic traffic jams have pushed many Bordeaux residents to switch to cycling, not necessarily because they are eco-friendly but primarily for practical reasons.

Among them, women are overrepresented compared to the profiles of cyclists in major French cities and we also observe that many scooters roam the streets.

A passion for scooters for five years

“95% of customers who come for cargo bikes are young parents who live in the city (intrarocade), explains Michaël Persichetti, manager of the Cyclable store in Bordeaux, which offers a wide range of cargo bikes. They want to be able to use it to go to the drive, pick up a package, etc. "

These XXL bikes can load one or two children but also some races and we see more and more in the streets of Bordeaux where they have been acclaimed for four to five years. "The city lends itself to it, it is quite flat and there are interesting cycling facilities," explains Michaël Persichetti, who says that his store has offered cargo bikes since 2010. We are also a very congested city, the third in France after Paris and Marseille ”.

Entry-level bikes of this type are offered at 1,500 euros and "it's not a bohemian thing," he says. Often it is equipment that replaces the second car. The purchase is made by two and the use is shared within the couple. Cargo bike sales represent a third of the bike turnover for this Bordeaux store. While four to five years ago, couples pushed the door of the store to find out about scooters, today they present themselves with an idea of a specific model in mind.

For Orianne Hommet, of the Vélo-Cité Bordeaux association, the enthusiasm for these special bikes is explained by the fact that the particular bike first found its place and that today there is a real bike culture in Bordeaux. "It is so difficult to get around that it will be easier to cross the city with a scooter than by car of course but also by tram or bus," she notes. We do not go from our car to a scooter, we have previously tried the particular bike and the massive use of cargo bikes shows a certain maturity of users compared to the practice of cycling.

Women overrepresented among cyclists

“Bordeaux is the only city of 200,000 or more inhabitants where women use the bicycle more often than men: 12.6% against 11.1%. Strasbourg has equivalent shares, "explains INSEE Nouvelle Aquitaine in the publication" Cycling to work: urban and short journeys ", published in January 2017. The institute links this particular feature of Bordeaux to a greater presence of women managers (11%) than on average in cities with 200,000 or more inhabitants (8.7%).

"In certain areas, women do not dare to cycle for safety reasons and we can only rejoice that this is not the case in Bordeaux, comments Orianne Hommet. It should be noted, however, that we are talking about the heart of the city, in industrial zones, such as the aeropark, there are more male cyclists ”.
