Beatrice Fihn believes that the speech by Macron could affect Sweden because the government chose not to sign the UN Convention on a Nuclear Ban. The message came in July 2019 after the government investigated the issue.

"This makes Sweden's reaction interesting, a country that has been against nuclear weapons in the past, but now has an increasingly unclear position when it comes to accepting weapons of mass destruction," says Beatrice Fihn, director of ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons).

She continues:

- Just a few weeks after the message that Sweden should not write about the ban on nuclear weapons, Defense Minister Hultqvist went out and confirmed a new defense cooperation with France (European intervention initiative) which, according to Macron, aims to create a "common strategic culture", which many see is as a tool to encourage European countries such as Sweden, Finland, Ireland and Austria to become more positive about nuclear weapons and to accept threats to use them.
