So he had to smile. Young candidate Pete Buttigieg leads the Democratic primary in Iowa, according to partial results for 62% of the polling stations. He is ahead of socialist senator Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, while Joe Biden performs poorly.

Buttigieg, 38, former mayor of an average city in Indiana representing the moderate wing, obtained 26.9% of the delegates on this partial count, ahead of Bernie Sanders, 78, at 25.1%. The progressive senator Elizabeth Warren is at 18.3% and the former vice-president of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, experiences a setback, finishing fourth at 15.6%. Senator Amy Klobuchar obtains 12.6% of the delegates.

Organizers' fiasco

We will have to wait for the final figures to know how many of the 41 delegates at stake each candidate wins. Iowa Democrat Party President Troy Price apologized Tuesday for the "unacceptable" delay in publishing the results, he said due to a computer problem with the application used for polling station lifts.

He refused to give any time for publication of the rest of the results, but assured of the reliability of the reported figures, which have been verified by paper versions. "We know these numbers are correct," said Troy Price.
