"Many of the big illegal clubs I would say are completely gone," says Freddy Nilsson, municipal police in Malmö north.

Close 15 clubs

Freddy Nilsson says that the police know about many of the premises that were previously the subject of illegal clubs, and that they have the habit of looking at them.

- It has spread that we have worked quite intensively on the problems. This means that there is no incentive to start them up anymore.

Over the course of more than two years, the police together with other authorities have closed down around 15 illegal clubs around Malmö.

Authorities cooperate

The police, the Tax Authority and the municipality's permit unit and environmental management have collaborated to extinguish the illegal clubs in Malmö.

- That's what makes clubs no longer appear so often. If we find an illegal club, we put a ban on having that type of business, ”says Gunilla Andersson, project manager at the Environmental Management.

Several illegal clubs have been going on

Gunilla Andersson explains that, in collaboration with other authorities, the environmental administration has seen several times that new illegal clubs have been on the way again. In these situations, they have contacted the property owners and explained the situation.

- We have said that you well remember that you have a ban on this. If we find that you have this type of business, you will be fined. Then they blew everything.

The illegal clubs often sell alcohol without a license and pay no tax. But usually they are formally closed due to prevailing security shortcomings.

- We have found illegal clubs where they have blocked the escape routes. It's just pure luck that nothing has happened, says Gunilla Andersson.
