January 14, 2020Luigi Di Maio, political leader of the 5 Star Movement and Foreign Minister, is the host of Rai3's "Cartabianca" program. The presenter, Bianca Berlinguer, urged Di Maio on numerous open questions in the Italian political debate, from the commitment on the crisis in Libya to the balance within the Movement, from the changes to the electoral law to the regional elections in Emilia Romagna, from the alliance with the Pd to motorway concessions.

The rear stabbers
"Anyone who thinks that I am tired of the Movement has made a mistake. I am tired that someone who is in the back line comes to the front to stab me. I was elected political leader in 2017, we went to the government and now we are carrying out the electoral program. I think that Italians are interested in approving laws: we have approved 40 and we have to approve many others. It is normal that in a Movement that elected 330 parliamentarians there is someone who expresses dissent. When someone does not agree with the 5 Star Movement all the right to leave, but he could resign and be re-elected, not go to the Mixed Group ".

Libya needs European forces under the UN
"Our ambition must be to deploy European forces to guarantee diplomatic conclusions. We will never give military support to either side to fight each other. I think we must do it under the umbrella of the EU and the United Nations. We can be in Libya, as with the contingent at Misurata ".

Minniti is not needed in Libya
"Minniti's candidacy as a mediator? I don't think a European special envoy is needed. There are already foreign ministers. A special Italian envoy will be needed after the conclusions of the Berlin conference. No government-level speech was addressed. I remember that I am the minister who most defends the memoranda with Libya signed by Minniti ".

The electoral law will be proportional
"A political alliance with the Democratic Party? We are writing a proportional electoral law that does not provide for coalitions. The Movement represents the alternative to the right and to the left. There is a part of the Movement in Parliament that believes something should be created with the Democratic Party. But the vast majority of the Movement, and I with them, believe that the Movement must exist because it represents the alternative to the right and left ".

The regional vote is not a test
"In Italy we vote every three months and if every local election becomes a test for the government then no government will last. We run alone, as it always has been. Even in times of difficulty we must be an alternative between the two poles. They will choose citizens, there is no need to feel guilty about their decisions ".

No more profits for those who put their lives at risk
"The next few weeks will be decisive for the concessions on the highways. There will be a table on the government. We are also working very well with Minister De Micheli. If a dealer has not done the right maintenance, he no longer has to make profits on our highways, making I risk the lives of many Italians ".

With the new prescription, you just have to be smart and save yourself
"The new statute of limitations went into effect on January 1 and says there will be no more clever people who can save themselves from trial."

Changes to the Safety Decree only on the Mattarella reliefs
"We are committed to accepting Mattarella's comments on fines and public official outrage. We address these issues as per the government program. And why, when we did the government program in September, did the Pd not introduce these changes? I know if they will propose it in the new program. I don't want to go back to the time when billions of euros ended up in some cooperatives of those who made money on migrants ".

Humanitarian protection to those who have the right
"We are doing the work that Italy can do to decrease migratory flows, we think of repatriations. The important thing is to give humanitarian protection to those who have the right. Italy cannot think of tackling the issue of immigration and the needs of those who run away from wars ".

The former ally
"Salvini was never my type and I don't miss him".

As long as the Democratic Party will stick to the pacts it will be fine
"These are important days to plan the next three years of government. We want to write a timetable for the laws to be made. The minimum wage, the health care reform, the great topic of taxes, also introduced by Conte on the income tax reform. With the plan anti-evasion put in place we will be able to recover the resources to cut taxes. We must help the middle class, the part of the country that always works but struggles to make ends meet. "
