A 26-year-old German man suspected of having scratched at least 642 cars for a total loss of almost a million euros is on trial from Wednesday in Germany. Between February and April 2018, the suspect allegedly damaged the vehicles with a screw in three Bavarian cities, Würzburg, Veitshöchheim and Schweinfurt, where the trial is taking place. The amount of the damage is estimated at 930,000 euros.

This affair had mobilized the German police for several weeks. The police had even created a special commission to find the one who attacked the cars, according to the German news agency DPA. The police finally arrested the young man in April 2018, after a resident of Schweinfurt gave the alert on hearing the screeching of the screw against cars on the street.

But the man is tried only for part of the damage he would have caused: the court rejected the first attempts of the prosecutor to try him for cuts on 1,700 vehicles for a total of 2.3 million euros. damage, lack of sufficient evidence. The suspect's guilt must now be established for each of the 642 scratched cars. The court has already planned to devote 24 days of hearing to it.
