02 January 2020The Ankara Parliament has approved the motion authorizing the sending of Turkish soldiers to Libya, as requested by the government of Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj. This was reported by the news agency 'Anadolu'.

The aim of the motion, supported by the party of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the AKP, is to strengthen the military presence in support of the government of national agreement to stop the advance of the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army of General Khalifa Haftar, engaged since April in an offensive to take control of Tripoli.

The Turkish Parliament has therefore authorized the sending of soldiers to Libya in support of the government of Premier Fayez al-Serraj, recognized by the United Nations, to counter the attack by rival Khalifa Haftar's forces in Tripoli. 325 deputies voted in favor of the motion, 184 against, in the emergency session. The measure provides for a one-year mandate for deployment. "A Libya whose legitimate government is under threat can spread instability to Turkey," said Akp party deputy in power, Ismet Yilmaz, supporting the motion, while "those who do not want to act because of a risk throw our children in an even greater danger.
