Hundreds of Muslims in various parts of Britain volunteered to clean the streets after the New Year celebrations.

The local Daily Mail newspaper reported that more than 1500 Muslim youths took to the streets in the early hours of Wednesday morning to remove the trash left by the street celebrities.

She noted that volunteers collected hundreds of bags of leftovers in the streets in cities such as London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and others.

The newspaper quoted Imam Qamar Ahmad Dhofar, one of the Muslim leaders, as saying, "Our new year begins with prayer, and we gather for prayers for the sake of the world and for those who suffer."

Dhofar adds that "after that we go out to the streets and clean them after the celebrations are over ... This is a reminder to Muslim youth of their duty to serve their country."

He explained that this initiative aims to reduce the burden on cleaners, in light of widespread waste after the celebrations.

The number of Muslims in Britain is estimated at 4.1 million from about 66 million people.
