After having garnered two wins in two games, Esperance of Tunis and Almighty Mazembe were forced to share points by AS Vita Club (0-0) and Primeiro de Agosto (1-1) during the 3rd day of the group phase of the CAF Champions League 2019-2020. Raja Casablanca beat JS Kabylie (2-0).
Three weeks after the second day, the CAF Champions League resumed this Friday, December 27 with the first three matches of the third day of the group phase. A day that saw in particular the Espérance de Tunis, back from the 2019 Club World Cup with a 5th place in their pocket, and the Almighty Mazembe undergo their first stop.
The Almighty Mazembe neutralized by the champion of Angola
In the late afternoon, TP Mazembe played in Angola against Primeiro de Agosto, badly embarked in group A with a draw and a defeat in their first two matches. A performance far from that of the Congolese, victorious in their first two meetings and leaders of the group. A status that was confirmed in the first minutes in Luanda with the opening of the score signed Rainford Kalaba, author of a beautiful header on a center of Glody Likonza (8th). The advantage was short-lived however for Mazembe because the Angolans responded very quickly. After a parade by goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo, Cristovao Paciencia Mabululu followed well and pushed the ball into the back of the net without opposition (12th).
For lack of precision, no other goal was scored in this meeting. With this first draw (1-1), the Almighty Mazembe is still guaranteed to keep the head of group A at the end of this 3rd day, whatever the result of Saturday in Zesco United and Zamalek. Indeed, the Zambians have only one point and the Egyptians have the second place with 3 points.
ES Tunis mute against AS Vita Club
The other two meetings on Friday concerned Group D. L'Espérance de Tunis followed the same trajectory as the Almighty Mazembe in Group A: after two victories, place in the first draw. The Tunisians conceded it against AS Vita Club in a scoreless match (0-0) which however allows the Congolese visitors to score their first point in this Champions League.
Although neutralized, ES Tunis retains first place, but by only one point. In the other match, Raja Casablanca beat JS Kabylie (2-0). In an incandescent atmosphere in Casablanca, the Moroccans made the difference in the second half. After a good job from Soufiane Rahimi, Ben Malango released the Raja (51st), before Rahimi doubled the bet (54th). Esperance occupies first place with 7 points, against 6 for Raja.
