The Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera, in Tripoli, interviewed Fayez al-Sarraj, the head of the Libyan National Accord government, about the weapons he had requested from Turkey after Rome had not fulfilled his request.

The newspaper's correspondent, Lorenzo Cremonese, who conducted the interview, said that during the entire interview in the Tripoli library, al-Sarraj did not refer to the retired Major General Khalifa Haftar by name, but he was referring to him as the "aggressor."

Corriere della Sera notes the seriousness of the Libyan crisis, which is now ravaging political and military balances in the Mediterranean region, which has worsened in recent weeks after increased foreign military intervention.

She wonders if the doors of diplomacy are closed, referring to the confiscation of a Turkish ship at a time when Greece is sending its foreign minister for dialogue with the head of the interim government in the east of the country, Abdullah Al-Thani, which is not recognized by Europe.

Turkey and Italy
Al-Sarraj says he has requested weapons from several countries, including Italy, which also has the right to choose the policy that suits it and Libya's excellent relations with it.

He adds that he has not received any official Italian responses to it, and that he exchanged views with Foreign Minister de Mayo, who visited the country in depth.

Al-Sarraj says the international community appears divided. On the one hand, there are countries ready to arm our aggressor competitors, and on the other hand, there are countries that still believe that the only solution to the crisis must be political and through dialogue.

He explains that Italy is among the countries calling for a political solution, and indicates that a military attack causes untold suffering to the civilian population living under artillery and aircraft bombardment, which has so far killed and wounded and hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

Hifter offers
The Italian newspaper indicates that Haftar is advancing thanks to the Russian soldiers while the militias in Tripoli are publishing videos of the Turkish tanks that have reached Misurata, wondering whether Russian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan will eventually dictate the rules of the game.

Al-Sarraj says that the scenario has become difficult and more complicated due to foreign interference, and that the issue cannot be solved simply through discussions between Putin and Erdogan.

He adds that the process is characterized by continuous bilateral and multilateral contacts, not only with regional countries but also with the United States and with Germany committed to the United Nations in preparing for the Berlin conference, and with other European partners.

Al-Sarraj notes that the "aggressor" has already failed. The moment he launched his sudden attack on the fourth of last April, he was saying that he would enter Tripoli within 48 hours, and now, after nine months, the war is still going on.

OS and victory
Al-Sarraj says he is sure of the victory, and that in the end he will decide who has the right to negotiate the future of Libya and who is the "aggressor" who will be tried by the International Court.

Regarding the relationship with Turkey, the demarcation of maritime borders, and Italian criticism of Libya in this context, Al-Sarraj says that Turkey and Libya are members of the United Nations, and that they have independent and sovereign legal governments, but he said that he values the relationship with Italy and hopes to strengthen it.

However, Al-Sarraj says that his country was not supposed to inform Rome in advance about the relationship with Turkey, and he says - in response to whether he fears a shift in the Italian position in favor of Haftar - that de Mayo failed to curb the continuation of the aggression against the Serag government.

Libya and Syria
When asked whether Libya now looks very similar to Syria a few years ago, Al-Sarraj said, "For years we have been raising the alarm of foreign military interventions. I have always been warning of a proxy war before the attack of the aggressor started months ago."

He adds that it does not matter if these were Russian soldiers, or the Egyptians or other countries, and he asked whether the Italian government expected that "we remain from the spectators on the sidelines of the event while Tripoli is destroyed and civilians are killed and occupied."

Al-Sarraj expressed that the Berlin conference had been scheduled for the end of January, indicating that the purpose of the Berlin conference was to stop foreign interference, and then to organize direct dialogues between the Libyans.

He concludes that the problem is that the attacking "aggressor" is trying to gain more time, and continues to talk about "zero hours" and only believes in the military option, that it "bombs and wastes huge resources and does not build anything in the east."
