According to Muslim tradition, it is far more difficult for a woman than a man to marry someone from a religion other than Islam.

Imam Sherin Khankan wants to change this and in the mosque Mariam in Copenhagen, more than 45 marriages have taken place since its inception - half of which are between Muslim women and non-Muslim men.

- My two daughters fall in love with non-Muslims is very likely. We live in Europe, in Denmark. Therefore, the revolution must begin there, she says in the documentary The Reformist - the female imam.

Want the same rights

Sherin Khankan has encountered opposition from other Muslims who do not think a woman can be an imam.

"We should have the same rights, so that is why you men should advocate for female imams," she says in a debate on Islam at a Danish university.
