The multipurpose mesh bags were very popular among Soviet citizens during the time of Leonid Brezhnev, but they later fell into disuse. At that time, production was manual. The bags were braided by the blind, 90 percent of the production entrusted to the disabled.

Now fashion is back and a Muscovite entrepreneur has restarted production, giving work to the blind. The bag is environmentally friendly and very cheap, the production by hand costs much less than the machines. The blind do not work as much for money as for feeling involved in the social and economic life of the country. A lot of net bags were sent to Siberia.

A Russian family spends 15 euros a year for plastic bags, damaging the environment. Numerous shops are now exploring consumer demand for mesh bags. The purpose of the net bag distribution project is to embarrass those who shop using plastic bags.
