According to RIA Novosti, in September 2008, Bolivian President Evo Morales declared US Ambassador Philip Goldberg a persona non grata. He accused the diplomat of promoting separatist movements in the country.

After that, the American authorities expelled the ambassador of Bolivia.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the Bolivian authorities to speed up the process of moving towards free elections.
