Former US President Barack Obama has said that technology helps tear the world apart, nurtures the differences between rich and poor countries, as well as between people within a single country.

"The sharp increase in inequality, both within and between countries, is the product of globalization and technology," Obama was quoted as saying Thursday at an annual event in San Francisco.

"Technology has allowed us to communicate," Obama said. "We have a global market ... where you can move your technology to new markets. It helps amplify inequality."

He pointed out that social media such as Facebook and YouTube face charges of fueling polarization ... I feel as if things are getting out of control. What I see is a sense of anxiety and suspicion among many people. Feelings, there is a state of anger caused by technology. "
