Rached Ghannouchi, the historic leader of the Islamist movement Ennahdha, was elected Wednesday, November 13, president of the Tunisian Parliament through an agreement with the party of the controversial businessman Nabil Karoui.

Qalb Tounes surprised everyone by voting for the Ennahdha movement in the Tunisian Assembly. Until then, the Liberal Party, which came second in the general election with 38 seats, had always refused an alliance with Ennahdha. For its part, the Islamist party refused to ally with a man accused of corruption . But pragmatism has finally prevailed over the principles on both sides.

Ennahdha also teamed up, as expected, with Karama's coalition, which came in third in the parliamentary elections in October . Through these agreements, Ennahdha was able to garner a 123-vote majority out of the 217 in the Assembly of People's Representatives.

The leader of the Islamist party Rached Ghannouchi thus accesses the perch for a five-year term. The Democratic Movement and the Echaab (People) Party have declared that they will only support Ennahdha in Parliament if the Islamist movement agrees to appoint an independent figure to lead the next government. Ennahdha has until next Friday at the latest to appoint a prime minister.
