Six people were killed and 15 others injured on Wednesday after a fire broke out in an oil pipeline in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, the health ministry said.

Ministry spokesman Khaled Mujahid said a fire was caused by a leak in an oil pipeline that passed close to the town of Itai al-Baroud in Beheira governorate, 125 km north of Cairo.

He pointed out that 20 ambulances equipped to go to the scene of the accident, where the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, stressing that the injuries range from burns to different degrees in different parts of the body and bottlenecks.

Mujahid added that the Minister of Health and Population Hala Zayed directed the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health in the lake immediately after the incident to provide all necessary medical care for the injured, and to submit a detailed report of their cases and medical procedures taken.

Earlier, the governor of the lake said the incident occurred after an attempt to seize petroleum, and confirmed that the civil protection forces were able to control the fire.

The governor said that the police arrested one person after he was accused of attempting to seize petroleum materials, which led to the leakage of a flammable substance (petrol) on agricultural land and a water drainage adjacent to the pipeline of petroleum materials.
