"Hope you get raped by a bunch"

"Who the hell wants such a ugly and stupid woman as you?"

"You are hated do you understand?"

The handwritten letter that Ylva Stadell photographed and shared on his Facebook is two pages long.

The letter criticizes, among other things, the building permit for an Islamic center in Stenhagen, which was passed by the Planning and Building Committee, where Ylva Stadell is chairman, in October.

But mainly the letter contains personal hopes in a sexist tone. Among other things, Ylva Stadell is called a "disgusting girl".

"Not about me"

She did not share the letter for pity, she says.

- This is not about me. I am definitely not the one most exposed. It is journalists and other politicians who have it this way, and it is a democratic problem in our society that you are exposed to hatred and threats and that you get it addressed to your home.

By sharing the letter on social media, she wanted to show those who do not already know what they can stand as politicians.

- I get angry and think it's sad that you do this.

Extra exposed as a woman

But should you as a politician not tolerate criticism?

- Obvious. But I think it makes a difference to come up with factual arguments about a decision you think is bad - and to say that someone is ugly and should be raped. I think that you are extra exposed as a woman, and when there are sexist comments I think it has gone too far.

Handwritten letters do not belong to the ordinary. It is usually in emails or comment fields on social media that there is hatred and threats to politicians, and it needs to end, Ylva Stadell believes.

- I think we have a shared responsibility to ensure that we get a nice level of conversation. And I have received positive response from all political parties, everything from V to SD, who stand up for us to have a free, but quiet, conversation climate.
