First Minister of Scotland Hamza Haroon Yousaf lobbied for a new hate crime law. The law adds something new to existing hate crimes: “hate speech” against groups with protected characteristics, including gender reassignment.
Under this law, hostile behavior towards members of such groups or transmitting information to them can carry a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment.
