The teenagers have more than halved in the last ten years and for the nation as a whole they are also falling among women up to 29 years. And one important reason is that more and more young people are choosing long-acting contraceptives.

- Today, young people have learned that oral contraceptives and spirals are very effective protections against pregnancy, more effective than oral contraceptives, says Sara Hogmark, chief medical officer for maternal health care in Dalarna.

"Health care should motivate women to contraception"

Compared to our neighboring countries with similar abortion legislation, Sweden is still high in terms of abortion. To reduce the number further, Sara Hogmark believes that it is important that care to a greater extent motivates women to use effective contraceptives and that the quality of counseling is increased.

Half of those who do abortions have done so before

One figure that stands out in the statistics is that almost half of the abortions in Sweden are done by women who have previously done an abortion.

- I think it is important that after an abortion, you make sure that there is no gap between the abortion and that you start with your contraceptive.

In a research project, Sara Hogmark will now study 700 women to see if it is effective and safe to insert a spiral immediately after a medical abortion instead of waiting, as it has been found that up to 40 percent of women never return get spiral inserted.

In the clip above, Sara Hogmark talks about what may be behind the fact that so many women who have previously had an abortion end up in the same situation again.
