Two weeks ago, dogs from Norrbotten participated in a dog show in northern Norway. After returning home, the Swedish dog owners learned that a Norwegian dog had fallen ill with the same symptoms that had taken several dogs' lives in Norway.

"You are obviously worried that the dogs will get sick and not only for their own dogs but also for dogs that are in the immediate area," says Gabriella Holmström, chairman of the Kennel Club north Norrbotten.

After several dogs in Norway have suffered vomiting and diarrhea and subsequently died, an investigation is underway in Norway to find out more about the disease and why so many dogs have died from the same causes.

SVA follows the situation

The Swedish National Veterinary Institute in Sweden follows the situation in both countries, but has no indication that the disease is contagious or has affected dogs in Sweden.

- No dogs from Sweden who participated in the dog show in northern Norway have shown any signs of becoming ill after returning home, says Gabriella Holmström, chairman of the Kennel Club north Norrbotten.

The cause of deaths in Norway is still unknown, which is why the Norwegian kennel club has canceled all dog events.

The small game hunt begins

On September 16, the small game hunt in Sweden will be opened on the state's land above the cultivation limit and on reindeer herding even for foreign dogs and hunters.

The Swedish Agricultural Agency monitors the development, but so far there is no justification for introducing restrictions for Norwegian dogs to cross the border, the Swedish Agricultural Agency reports.
